Announcing the 3rd annual Hawaiian Open of Spearfishing with a unique OPEN tournament format where everyone is a winner. The Hawaiian Open of Spearfishing hopes to attract the world’s top competitive divers to the newest roi shooter on the island with a fun yet serious tournament format and the BIGGEST spearfishing prize table in the Pacific.
The tournament format is simplified with one word "OPEN" all waters surrounding the island of Oahu are "OPEN", and all forms of muscle powered watercraft are "OPEN". The species list, that’s "OPEN" too with each diver being able to weigh-in one gamefish and an "OPEN"number of invasives, which means unlimited roi, taape, or toau.
Each diver's score is calculated individually with the following formula the weight of one gamefish (no sharks, rays, eels, balloon/puffer fish allowed) with a max-scoring limit of 30 pounds combined with the total weight of all speared invasive fish species (roi, taape, toau, paddle-tail snapper).
The diver with the highest combined points of gamefish (max of 30 scoring pounds) and invasive species will be declared the top-scorer and will be allowed FIRST CHOICE from the prize table.
The diver with the 2nd highest combined score will be the second person allowed to choose a prize from the table. Thereafter each tournament participant, according to the tournament director’s discretion, will be allowed to choose their prize from the prize table in the order of their scoring until all tournament participants have been called and everyone has claimed a prize of their choosing.
Clarification on the rules:
Divers must ONLY their own muscle power while on the water. Swim-out or muscle power kayak only.
Divers must following all current Hawaii State Fishing regulations and laws.
Divers must use muscle powered slings or pneumatic spearguns in their fishing.
Divers must not use scuba or other artificial breathing equipment
Divers must weigh-in or be in line to weigh-in their catch by 4:00 PM or be disqualified.
You must dive with a dive partner(s) however scoring is individual. All fish weighed in must be speared by the diver on tournament day. All fish (including invasives) must be in edible condition mutilated, rotten, dehydrated, frozen, rancid, or non-fresh fish (as determined by tournament organizer ) will be disqualified. USE ICE. Any disqualification decision made by the tournament organizer is non-disputable.
If any tie in scoring exists, the diver with the earlier registration for the event will place ahead of the later registering diver.
Special Bonus Categories:

*As only one gamefish maybe weighed in the diver must choose their fish to be weighed and scored.
** A diver may win more than one special category. All prizes or picks from the special categories are in addition to the diver’s prize from their normal score.
If a diver weighs in a 10 pound gamefish and 15 pounds of invasives that diver will have a tournament score of 25 points.
If a diver weighs in a 45 pound ulua they will only receive a maximum of 30 points for that gamefish.
If a diver weighs in 45 pounds of invasives they will receive 45 points.
If diver "A" spears and weighs in only one a large gamefish a 100 pound ahi and no invasives, he will get 30 points. If diver "B" spears no gamefish but weighs in 30.1 pounds of invasives (roi, taape, toau) he will get 30.1 points. In this tournament diver "B" will place ahead of diver "A" and thus diver "B" will be selected to choose a prize before diver "A".
